Getting Started with Ledger

Welcome to the world of secure cryptocurrency management. Your Ledger hardware wallet is the most trusted way to protect your digital assets. Follow our comprehensive guide to set up your device and start your journey into secure crypto ownership.

What You'll Need

Your Ledger Device

Unbox your Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, or Stax. Make sure the package is sealed and hasn't been tampered with.

Computer or Phone

A computer (Windows, Mac, or Linux) or smartphone (iOS or Android) to install Ledger Live application.

USB Cable

Use only the USB cable provided in your Ledger box to connect your device safely to your computer.

Setup Your Device in 4 Steps

Setting up your Ledger device is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. Follow these steps carefully to ensure maximum security for your cryptocurrency holdings.

1

Download Ledger Live

Ledger Live is your gateway to managing crypto securely. Visit the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system. Always ensure you're downloading from the legitimate source to avoid phishing attempts. The application is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android. Once downloaded, install the application and launch it. The interface is designed to be intuitive, guiding you through each step with clear instructions. Never download Ledger Live from third-party websites or app stores other than official ones, as this could compromise your security from the start.

2

Initialize Your Device

Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the provided USB cable. When you power on your device for the first time, you'll be prompted to choose between setting up as a new device or restoring from a recovery phrase. For new users, select "Set up as new device." You'll then be asked to choose a PIN code. This PIN is crucial as it protects your device from unauthorized access. Choose a PIN between 4 and 8 digits that's memorable to you but difficult for others to guess. Never use obvious combinations like 1234 or your birthday. Enter your PIN carefully, and you'll be asked to confirm it by entering it again.

3

Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

This is the most critical step. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase. This phrase is the master key to your cryptocurrency. Write each word down carefully on the recovery sheet provided in your Ledger box. Use only this paper, never store it digitally, and triple-check that each word is spelled correctly and in the right order. Your device will ask you to verify several words from your phrase to ensure you've written them down accurately. Store this recovery sheet in a secure location, such as a safe or safety deposit box. Anyone with access to this phrase can access your funds, so treat it with extreme care and never share it with anyone, including Ledger support.

4

Install Apps and Start Using

Once your device is set up, you can install cryptocurrency apps through Ledger Live. Each cryptocurrency requires its own app on your device. Navigate to the Manager tab in Ledger Live, and you'll see a catalog of available apps. Install the apps for the cryptocurrencies you plan to use, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, or others. Your Ledger device has limited storage, but you can uninstall and reinstall apps as needed without affecting your holdings. After installing the necessary apps, you're ready to receive, store, and send cryptocurrency securely. Always verify transaction details on your device screen before confirming any transaction.

Critical Security Reminders

Never share your 24-word recovery phrase with anyone. Ledger will never ask for it, and neither should anyone else.

Always verify the receiving address on your Ledger device screen before confirming any transaction.

Only download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website. Phishing sites are common.

Keep your device firmware updated through Ledger Live to get the latest security patches.

Store your recovery phrase offline in a secure physical location. Never save it on your computer or cloud.

Your Security is Paramount

Ledger devices use secure element chips, the same technology used in passports and credit cards, to protect your private keys. Your keys never leave the device, making it virtually impossible for hackers to access your funds remotely. However, the security of your crypto ultimately depends on how well you protect your recovery phrase and follow best practices. Stay vigilant against phishing attempts, always double-check addresses, and never rush through transactions.
